Police close investigation into UK election scandal

The Metropolitan Police announced the conclusion of its involvement in the investigation into the UK general election betting scandal. The police stated that the evidence gathered was insufficient to support accusations of misconduct in public office. Initially, the investigation focused on politicians and officials who were suspected of using insider information to bet on the election date. With the police stepping back, the Gambling Commission has now taken full responsibility for the investigation.

The Gambling Commission, operating under Section 42 of the Gambling Act, continues to investigate whether confidential information was illicitly used for betting purposes. Commission Chief Executive Andrew Rhodes emphasised that the ongoing criminal investigation still involves collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Not enough evidence to proceed with charges

Among those under scrutiny are seven police officers who were initially arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. However, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) determined that the evidence did not meet the high standards required to proceed with charges. Despite this, these officers remain under investigation by both the Gambling Commission and the Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards.

Detective Superintendent Katherine Goodwin clarified in a press statement that the end of the Metropolitan Police’s involvement should not be seen as an exoneration of the suspects. She noted that potential violations of the Gambling Act are still under close examination by the Gambling Commission, which is well-equipped to handle such cases.

As the focus shifts to the Gambling Commission’s ongoing investigation, the public eagerly awaits further revelations. The outcome of this case, which has shaken public confidence, will largely depend on the Commission’s ability to uncover any illegal activities that may have influenced election-related betting.
