Koi Nation gains unprecedented support for Shiloh Resort & Casino

In a landmark move, the Koi Nation of Northern California has garnered widespread support for its ambitious Shiloh Resort & Casino project in unincorporated Sonoma County. This support extends beyond conventional lines, with backing from elected officials, public agencies, tribal governments, and community figures, forming a robust coalition that emphasizes the project’s significance.

Coalition of diverse backers

Leading the charge are notable figures such as California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, exemplifying the project’s broad appeal. The inclusion of the Northern California Carpenters Union, retired law enforcement personnel like Lake County Sheriff Bryan Martin, and former Santa Rosa City Councilmembers Tom Schwedhelm and John Sawyer underscores the diverse range of stakeholders who see the Shiloh Resort & Casino as a catalyst for positive change.

It is interesting to note that this coalition transcends individual interests, with support from numerous tribes, environmentalists like actor Peter Coyote, and public agencies such as the Sonoma County Fire District.

This collaborative effort signals a united front for the Koi Nation’s endeavour, highlighting the project’s potential to benefit the broader community.

Economic self-reliance and land restoration

At the forefront of the Koi Nation’s vision is the Shiloh Resort & Casino, poised to be an economic cornerstone that reclaims land lost in the 1950s. This ambitious venture not only promises entertainment and gaming options but also envisions a 400-room hotel, marking a substantial contribution to the region’s hospitality sector.

Chairman Darin Beltran of the Koi Nation Tribal Council, (above in photo) pointed out the importance of tribal governments advocating for one another, viewing the project as an opportunity to exercise sovereign rights under federal law. The project aligns with the tribe’s pursuit of economic self-reliance, representing a significant step towards rebuilding a self-sustaining future.

Environmental assessment concluded

As the Koi Nation awaits the crucial approval from the United States Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs for the Environmental Assessment (EA), the project remains in a pivotal stage.

The EA’s public review period, that was finalised in November 2023, signals progress in the approval process, setting the stage for potential remarkable developments.

Furthermore, the partnership with Oklahoma’s Chickasaw Nation in 2022 adds a layer of strategic collaboration to the project. With Global Gaming Solutions (GGS), a business entity of the Chickasaw Nation, overseeing the management and operation of the facility upon completion, the Shiloh Resort & Casino emerges as a sign of economic restoration with a vision that extends beyond tribal boundaries.
